Energy
Scottish minsters are responsible for approving applicationss to build, opeate or modify onshore electricty generating stations with capacities exceeding 50 megawatts, as well as all applications to install overhead power lines, large oil and gas pipelines, and associated infrastructure.
All energy has been privatised. The National grid is owned by National Grid electricty Transmission PLC in England and Wales. In Scotland its owned by Scottish Power in the South, who is owned by Iberdrola, a Spanish company) and SSEN transmission in the north, which is 75% owned by SSE PLC, and 25% by Ontario teachers pension plan board. SSE moved its UK business into a new Swiss holding company in case it may be placed back into public ownership.
Wind produced 30.1 TWH electricty in 2024. Scotland continues to produce more electricty than it needs. In 2024 it exported 19.7 TWH of net electricty to other UK nations. Scotland does not own the electricty it generates.
Battery storage in Scotland expected to grow six times from the 4.5 GW installed today to 27 GW by 2030.
Europe’s largets battery-storage facility, Blairhillock, between Inverness and Aberdeen currently delivers 200MW for 2 hours, with plans to expand capacity to 300 MW. Once fully operational, the site could generate enough electricty to meet the needs of roughly 33 million households, at an estimated cost £150 million.
Building has started on a 300 MW battery storage facility in Kilmarnock, and the ground is being prrepared for a similar 400 MW installation at Eccles in the Scottish Borders.
Do you know what is the impact all the changes that are being introduced and what are the consequences?
Cables being run from Scotland to England, on land, and under the sea. Who benefits?
The introduction of very high pylons to move the electricity. Are local communities consulted?
The battery storage facilities to store it. Is the fire service involved in the approval?
The solar and wind farms. All major changes to the supply of our energy. Do we know and understand what is happening?
What are the risks? What is the cost? Who pays? Who owns the infrastructure? Who profits ? Do we have any say ?
